MQL5 Virtual Hosting vs a Forex VPS: What Each One Runs, Costs and Rules Out

For one MetaTrader account running DLL-free Expert Advisors (EAs) or a signal subscription, MQL5 Virtual Hosting is usually the simpler and cheaper choice: $15 for one month or $120 for twelve, as listed on 3 November 2026. A full Windows Forex VPS fits better once you need DLLs, Python or other external programs, a platform other than MetaTrader, remote desktop access, or three or more accounts running at the same time. The sections below trace each limit to MetaQuotes’ own documentation, show where the cost crosses over and end with a decision checklist.

Disclosure: this site’s publisher sells full Windows VPS plans for traders. The full-VPS figures below come from that company’s entry plan, and the MQL5 figures from MetaQuotes pages, both read on 3 November 2026. The editorial note at the end explains how that shaped the comparison.

Side by side: MQL5 Virtual Hosting and a full Windows VPS

MQL5 Virtual Hosting is rented from inside the MetaTrader terminal; your charts, EAs and settings are copied to a MetaQuotes-network server that runs a terminal with no interface. A full Windows VPS is a remote Windows Server machine where you log in and install what you want. The full-VPS column uses the publisher’s entry plan as a worked example, one data point and not an industry average.

Billing states are not mixed: one month is compared with one month, twelve with twelve. VPS prices exclude VAT. The MQL5 plan page does not say how tax is handled at checkout.

How this comparison was built

Every MQL5 limit here comes from the MQL5 service pages and rules, the MetaTrader 5 help on virtual hosting and Market activations, or the MQL5 Python documentation, all read on 3 November 2026. Where a limit is this article’s inference from two documents rather than a sentence in one, the text says so. The full-VPS data comes from the publisher’s own plan, trial and terms pages, read the same day. No latency or execution tests were run, so every speed figure below is a vendor’s statement and labelled as one.

What MQL5 Virtual Hosting does and where its limits come from

You rent it from the Navigator panel of a desktop MetaTrader terminal, which picks the hosting server nearest your broker and shows the delay from your PC and from that server before you pay [5]. After payment you run a migration: “All” copies charts, EAs, indicators, signal copying parameters and email settings; “Experts” skips the signal subscription [4].

The rules define the boundaries:

  • One account per terminal. One rented terminal works with one trading account, and MT4 accounts get MT4 terminals only [3]. The same account may use several virtual terminals [3].
  • No DLLs. The rules say no DLLs are allowed, and a program that tries to call one is stopped with a critical error [3].
  • No interface. The virtual platform has no user interface and you have no physical access [3][4]. You can read its journal from your own terminal [6], but you cannot open a window on it.
  • A filtered copy of your desktop. Charts without an EA are ignored even when custom indicators run on them. MetaQuotes’ workaround is to attach the indicator to a chart with an “empty” EA that places no trades [4]. Scripts and non-standard symbols or timeframes are not transferred, and a paid hosting takes at most 32 charts with EAs [3][4].
  • A history cap. Each chart holds at most 500,000 bars [3][4].
  • No one-time-password accounts. The help section says such accounts cannot be used, because the platform must run on its own [4].

Python and other external programs are not listed anywhere in what migrates, and the platform has no interface to start them from. The MetaTrader 5 Python package collects data directly from a MetaTrader 5 terminal through interprocess communication [8], which in practice means the same machine. Read together, those documents leave a Python script nowhere to run on virtual hosting. MQL5 does not publish a sentence that says so, so this is an inference, not a quotation.

When MQL5 Virtual Hosting is the better choice

Pick it when these describe you:

You run one account and a small number of DLL-free EAs. The price gap is large: the entry full-VPS plan costs about 2.1 times as much month to month ($31.99 against $15) and about 2.6 times as much on twelve month terms ($25.59 against $10 a month) [2][11]. If one terminal is all you need, you would be paying for capacity you cannot use.

Your broker sponsors it. MetaQuotes lists a Sponsored plan, free hosting paid by the broker, with availability depending on the broker [5]. Sponsored and other free hosting migrates up to 16 charts with EAs instead of 32 [3]. If your broker offers it, the cost comparison below does not apply to you.

You copy MQL5 signals. The “All” migration moves signal copying parameters to the virtual terminal [4].

You use paid products from the MQL5 Market. The help section says migrated Market products stay fully functional and the number of available activations is not decreased. It adds that this automatic licensing is provided only for the virtual platform [4]. Anywhere else, a Market product is bound to a computer by an activation, and each product has at least five [10].

You do not want to run Windows. There is nothing to patch and no remote desktop to secure.

Your broker’s servers sit far from four cities. MQL5 says it operates more than thirty hosting points [1]. A provider with four locations may sit farther from some brokers, and the comparison inside MetaTrader shows whether that matters for yours [5].

When a full Windows VPS fits better

You need several accounts at once. One MQL5 rental per account adds up quickly; the next section works through the numbers. One VPS can run several terminals, each on a different account, while the plan’s CPU and RAM carry the load (how to install several MetaTrader platforms on one server).

Your EA or indicator needs a DLL. News-feed readers, bridges to outside software and some copiers import DLLs. They cannot start on MQL5 hosting [3]. On a full VPS you have Administrator access, and MetaTrader has an “Allow DLL imports” option that its own help text says to enable only for trusted applications [7]. The example provider’s pages state no DLL policy, so confirm with its support before you rely on a specific library [12].

You use another platform or an outside program. cTrader, NinjaTrader, a Python script that talks to MT5 or a standalone risk tool all need a Windows machine you can log into [8][12].

You want to look, click and change things. On a VPS you can open the terminal over Remote Desktop, check a position, edit a setting or run the Strategy Tester. On virtual hosting you change the setting at home and migrate again [4].

You run a trade copier between terminals. The MQL5 rules tie each rented terminal to one account and describe no link between terminals [3]. A copier that connects a master terminal to followers typically needs a machine where you control all of them. That is this article’s reading of the rules, not a stated prohibition, so ask MetaQuotes support if your setup depends on it.

You use custom symbols or scripts. Neither migrates [4].

A full VPS has costs of its own. You maintain Windows, you secure Remote Desktop, and a plan too small for your terminals slows all of them. The “up to 4 terminals” figure is a vendor guide, and heavy indicators or many charts can use up the cores sooner [11].

What the price gap looks like for one to four accounts

MQL5 sells one rental per account, while a full VPS plan is one machine with a terminal limit. The table assumes the entry plan carries four terminals of your EAs without strain:

Accounts running togetherMQL5, 1 month eachMQL5, 12 months each (total)Entry VPS, 1 monthEntry VPS, 12 months (total)
1$15$120$31.99$307.10
2$30$240$31.99$307.10
3$45$360$31.99$307.10
4$60$480$31.99$307.10

On these figures MQL5 is cheaper for one and two accounts, and the VPS is cheaper from three accounts in both billing states [2][11]. The result moves if your EAs need more than the plan’s resources, if you need DLLs or remote access anyway, or if either vendor changes prices. Broker-sponsored MQL5 hosting removes the MQL5 column entirely for the accounts it covers.

Latency, location and uptime: what is only vendor-stated

Neither side publishes audited latency. MQL5’s service page says 96% of broker servers can be reached in under 10 ms and 84% in under 3 ms [1]. Another MQL5 page says under 5 ms for 80% of broker servers [9]. These are two cuts of vendor data, and neither states a method or a date. The same page argues that hosts that share hardware among many machines can add roughly 50 to 150 ms of server-side delay [9]. It gives no test method, so treat it as MetaQuotes’ claim about its own design.

The service page also states a maximum uptime of 99.99% [1]. The service rules say the administration owns none of the physical servers and makes no guarantee of virtual terminal operation, and let hosters run maintenance for up to 4 hours a day on weekends and up to 15 minutes a day on weekdays [3]. Read the rules, not the headline figure. For a full VPS, look in the provider’s terms for any written uptime commitment, because a number in marketing copy is not one.

To check for yourself, use the comparison MetaTrader shows before you rent [5], test a full VPS during a trial against the same broker account, and measure delay to your broker’s trade server over several sessions.

Decision checklist

Choose a full Windows VPS if any of these is true:

  • You run EAs or indicators on more than two accounts at the same time.
  • Any program you use imports a DLL.
  • You use cTrader, NinjaTrader or any non-MetaTrader software, or Python with MetaTrader 5.
  • You need to log in, watch the terminal, edit settings or run the Strategy Tester remotely.
  • You use custom symbols, scripts or charts with non-standard timeframes.
  • Your broker account needs a one-time password at login.
  • You run a copier that links several terminals.

Choose MQL5 Virtual Hosting if all of these are true:

  • One account, MetaTrader 4 or 5, and no DLLs.
  • Your EAs and indicators run from charts with an EA attached, 32 charts or fewer.
  • You want the lowest monthly cost and do not want to run Windows.

If both lists fit, start with the cheaper option and review after a month.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use MQL5 Virtual Hosting and a full VPS together?

Yes. The rules say a single account can be used on several virtual terminals with no stated limit [3], and a full VPS is a separate machine. The risk is duplicate orders if the same EA trades the same account from two places, so move the environment rather than copying it.

What happens if my MQL5 subscription lapses?

The hosting data is deleted from the server and a new rental means setting up the environment again [5]. Renewal is automatic only; manual renewal is not supported. Auto-renewal uses the original payment method, falls back to your MQL5 balance and is skipped if the hosting was stopped [5].

Do I lose MQL5 Market activations on a full VPS?

A move to a full VPS uses one activation, because the VPS counts as a new computer. Several terminals on that same VPS share it, since an activation binds a product to a computer and not to a platform instance or an account [10]. Every product has at least five, the seller can set more, and the count left is shown on the product page [10]. Virtual hosting is the exception: its licensing does not spend activations [4].

Can I try either option before committing?

MQL5 offers a 24 hour free trial that converts to a paid plan automatically, and a full refund if you cancel within 24 hours of paying [1][6]. After that there is no refund, but unused time is credited to your MQL5 account as free minutes that can pay for a new rental [6]. The MQL5 rules page separately says a cancelled paid rental is not refunded [3], so keep your receipt and ask support if the difference matters. The example VPS has a 3 day trial for $0.99 that moves to $31.99 a month afterwards, and non-trial plans carry a 14 day money-back guarantee [11][13].

Is a VPS faster than MQL5 Virtual Hosting?

Not by default. Order delay depends on the distance to your broker’s trade server, how busy the host is, what your EA does and how your broker handles orders. MQL5 picks the nearest of its hosting points for you and lets you move to another hosting server afterwards [6], while with a full VPS you pick the city. Only a measurement on your own account settles it.

Does MQL5 Virtual Hosting work with MetaTrader 4?

Yes. An MT4 account gets an MT4 virtual terminal and an MT5 account an MT5 one [3]. Accounts that require a one-time password at login cannot be used [4]. On a full VPS you can type a code by hand, but check how often your broker asks for one.

Which setup to pick

  • One account, DLL-free EAs, lowest cost: rent MQL5 Virtual Hosting from inside your terminal after checking the ping comparison it shows.
  • Several accounts, DLLs, other platforms or manual access: a full Windows VPS. See the MetaTrader 5 VPS plans or the MetaTrader 4 VPS plans, and use the 3 day trial to test delay to your own broker before you commit.
  • Not sure which location suits your broker: the broker latency tool lists the publisher’s own measured delays from its four locations to broker servers. They are not independently audited.

This article is general information about trading infrastructure and does not constitute financial advice. Performance depends on broker execution quality, market conditions, and trader skill, none of which a VPS can fully control. Hosting does not change whether a strategy is profitable.

Commercial interest: the publisher of this site sells full Windows VPS plans, so it benefits when readers choose that category. To limit the effect, the article states plainly where MQL5 Virtual Hosting is cheaper or simpler, takes every MQL5 limit from MetaQuotes documentation, and labels vendor-stated figures.
